Pelusey Newsletter - July 2010

Pelusey Photography Celebration

In September 2010, it will be ten years since we began the partnership that is Pelusey Photography today. Small business statistics say that between 40% and 80% of new businesses don't survive 5 years. So we have done pretty well. Yeh us.

And we spend almost 24 hours a day together and we are still married. We must be doing something right.

To celebrate the ten years of Michael and Jane working together as Pelusey Photography, we are planning an event that will co-incide with the launch of our boutique on-line photo library. Stay tuned for the details.

Who is living their passion?

Over the last ten years we have designed our work and leisure to make sure we are living our passions. So what does that mean?

  • we are doing something we love.
  • we are doing something that makes time fly.
  • we feel there is purpose to what we are doing instead of just going through the motions.

Are you living your passion? Or do you know someone who is living their dream?

We would love to know who out there is, so we can get them involved in our next big project. If you or someone you know meets the living your passion criteria, email us with their name and contact details. We will announce our next project in an upcoming newsletter.

Our next adventure

You may have noticed we have been doing some adventurous stuff lately. Some may say it is a midlife crisis, or we are ticking of the bucket list. What we are doing is pushing out our boundary conditions. You've probably heard the saying "if your not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space" Anonymous. To make sure we aren't taking up too much space we have been abseiling, rockclimbing, glacier climbing, fly fishing and sky diving.

So this month's adventure is something we have been meaning to do for years. Previously we have not been in Exmouth long enough or at the wrong time of year.

We went snorkelling with Whalesharks. These sharks visit Exmouth between March and July every year. The sharks that visit Ningaloo Reef are young males. We saw three different whalesharks. The first one was a four metre male that was swimming quite fast. The last one was a huge six metre specimen and just gliding around in large circles, so we managed to swim with him many times. They are so graceful in the water, opening and shutting their mouths to filter the plankton that they live off. They also have beautiful markings which are unique to them like fingerprints.

Tourists are encouraged to take photos and upload them to the ecoocean website where a computer will identify each whaleshark. We have done this.

We also swam with Manta Rays, a bronze whaler shark and reef shark. We saw lots of hump back whales as well. Thanks to the Ningaloo Whaleshark-n-dive crew for a great day.

Another person that is living his passion is Brad Norman who set up Ecocean. This idea turns every whaleshark swimmer in to a shark researcher. After taking photos of these beautiful creatures (and we took a few), they can be uploaded to the website. A computer program identifies each whaleshark and the researcher is notified every time someone else spots the whaleshark. This is bringing conservation to everyday people. The website is www.whaleshark.org. We look forward to seeing what our whalesharks get up to on the upcoming years.

Dry July

On a more personal note, The Dry July campaign raises money for the oncology unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth. I have committed to being dry (no alcohol) for the whole 31 days of July. So far I have raised $600.00 for the ABC 720 James Lush team (WA's number one team). Feel free to help me survive the month by donating. Just click on the picture of me and my last drink on June 30th.
