Where were we?
November 2004
In November 2004 we were lucky enough to go to Lord Howe Island. Many will be asking where is that? If you run a line half way between Sydney and Brisbane and extend it 600 kilometres out into the Pacific Ocean.
The small island is the remnant of a volcano cone. The island is surrounded by one of the more southern coral reefs and the land is covered with rainforest.
The adventure begins as the small plane lands on a tiny runway between to mountains. There is no camping on the island and accommodation places limit the visitors to 400.
This is a place that is for people who like the outdoors because most of the activities involve getting out and into the beautiful scenery.
We spent two weeks on the island and did most things.
We cycled from one end of the island to the other. We kayaked in the idyllic Lagoon. We went scuba diving on the beautiful coral reef. We snorkelled with the King Fish at Ned’s Beach. We did most of the walk trails including the inspiring Mount Gower. Mount Gower is 875 metres of rainforest covered mountain. After the vertigo inducing climb, we met some of the rare and endangered Lord Howe Island woodhen. These brown birds are a testament of the dedication of the local people who saved the birds from extinction. There were only nine birds left.
Best Practice Trails Development -The Better Business Blitz
On the 19th and 20th November we participated in the Best Practice Trails Development Better Business Blitz. This Blitz in Australia's Golden Outback was a new innovative idea created by Lance Hardy and Kate Mills from Tourism WA. People interested in trail development joined experts on trails in the Goldfields. This was a hands on experience as we all did the Golden Quest Discovery Trail together. The Golden Quest Discovery Trail is one of the trails we assessed for the Top Trails project. Subsiquently, it was included as one of WA's Top Trails. The "roadtrip" was fantastic because a group of people passionate about their trails got to share ideas, learn about trail development processes and got great trails tips.

HEMA Mapping
During November we have been mapping part of the South Coast for the upcoming Goldfields Esperance Region map. Even though we think we have seen most of the state it is great to discover new places. Particularly those that we mark as "must come back here!"
When we did the Top WA 4WDs Guide and Atlas, Jane worked under trying conditions. The GPS was attached to a laptop which she balanced on her lap. Computer's actually get quite warm underneath. When bumping over 4WD tracks, she also had to hold the screen so it didn't break. Plus the skill of documenting features and roads while travelling rough roads without getting car sick.
New technology now means that Jane's mapping woes are a thing of the past. HEMA have brought out their Navigator. It is a mini computer with Oziexplorer software and internal GPS. It is also a street navigator - you know - one of those female voices saying "turn around now, turn around at the next opportunity". Now all this means Jane gets to sit back and relax as the 4.3 inch screen does all the work. The GPS arrow leaves a blue snail trail on the route you have just driven. It also has Moving Map software so it can be used almost anywhere.

Photo Galleries
Our photo gallery for November is Market Daze. When we travelling, we love a market. It gives a good insight into general life for the people of that country. The gallery images come from countries such as Guatemala, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam and China..
During the month we also posted some blogs.
Confessions of puppy-sitters - This month we meet Zorro and Zena
Photography Tips - Mike takes photographers through ancient ruins and how to get the best images.
South America without a clue - Mike's South American diary has taken us via Hawaii and San Fransisco.
Cheers
